ATBC Study Baseline
Baseline examination during which participants completed a general risk factor, smoking, and medical history questionnaire, along with a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ).
Background factors, lifestyle, anthropometric measures, medical history were recorded.
Fasting serum samples were collected. Toenail sample was also collected (Nail samples are stored in National Cancer Institute, USA).
Genome-wide SNP data is available for selection of the study participants (imputed genotype data and chip genotypes).
This data collection event is identified by round number 01 of the FIN-ATB Cohort 21 in the harmonized MORGAM data. Metabochip and Exome+ genotyping (GWA studies) has been done for the case-cohort selection in the MORGAM Project.
For the data available locally (registries, nutrition, genomics (for a subgroup), please see the website of THL Biobank where the variables are described in detail. The ATBC Study Web Site describes the study details and procedures used for data collection and the questionnaire forms used are available for download.

ATBC Study Round 2
Re-examinations of the cohort consisted of three annual visits to the local field center. Round 2 denotes the time of the intermediate serum sampling in a random sample of the cohort in the MORGAM data.
Participants were asked about their health, use of non-trial vitamin supplements, and smoking habits since the last visit.
Height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate, and visual acuity were measured once a year. At three years, the food frequency questionnaire was repeated for all participants.
Fasting serum samples were collected. From the second year of the study onward, serum was also taken annually from a random sample of 700-800 participants.
For the data available locally (registries, nutrition, genomics (for a subgroup), please see the website of THL Biobank where the variables are described in detail. The ATBC Study Web Site describes the study details and procedures used for data collection and the questionnaire forms used are available for download.

Tromso Survey 3
Baseline examination (questionnaire and health examination).
A brief questionnaire accompanied the invitation included questions on diagnosed cardiovascular diseases or diabetes, symptoms of cardiovascular diseases, consumption of salty food and preference of fat type, smoking habits, coffee consumption and physical activity during work and leisure time. People who attended the study received another questionnaire on diet, psychological pressure, ?stress?, social conditions, the occurrence of disease in relatives, pregnancy, birth and menstruation and the public use of medical health services.
Measurements of height, weight and blood pressure were taken. A blood sample was also taken to measure serum total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides and gamma-glutamyltransferase (gamma-GT). A simple electrocardiogram (ECG) was also taken.
Women aged 40-56 years were offered a breast cancer examination (X-ray mammography).
The survey 3 is included in the harmonized MORGAM data. This data collection event is identified by the round number 03 of the NOR-TRO Cohort 21 in the MORGAM data.
Local data available from questionnaires, various measurements and clinical examinations from all Tromsø surveys are described in detail in the page http://tromsoundersokelsen.uit.no/tromso/. The questionnaire forms and invitation letter used are available in the webpage of the study for download.

Tromso Survey 4
Baseline examination (questionnaire and health examination).
A brief questionnaire accompanied the invitation including the questions on general health condition, diagnosed heart and cardiovascular diseases or diabetes and history of heart and family cardiovascular diseases, muscle pains and physical discomfort, passive smoking and smoking habits, physical leisure activity, coffee, alcohol and fat consumption, education level and current work situation. People who attended the study received another questionnaire on illnesses, social conditions, use of health services, diet, alcohol, menstruation, pregnancy and contraception. Separate questionnaires were prepared for people aged under 70 and for those aged 70 or elder.
Measurements of height, weight and blood pressure were taken. A blood sample was also taken to measure serum total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, gamma-glutamyltransferase (GT), haemoglobin and blood cell count ("plot").
Everyone in the 55-74 age group, along with 5-10 percent in the 25-54 and 75-85 age groups were given the opportunity to undergo an extensive special study (second visit 2-4 weeks later). A total of 7965 people accepted this offer. This included also measurement of bone density as a part of the TROST study. The second visit included ultrasound of carotid artery and abdominal aorta, echocardiography, electrocardiography, bone densitometry of the hip (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, DEXA) and spirometry.
The survey 4 is included in the harmonized MORGAM data. This data collection event is identified by the round number 04 of the NOR-TRO Cohort 21 in the MORGAM data.
Local data available from questionnaires, various measurements and clinical examinations from all Tromsø surveys are described in detail in the page http://tromsoundersokelsen.uit.no/tromso/. The questionnaire forms and invitation letter used are available in the webpage of the study for download.
