The Biobank of Eastern Finland provides extensive and high-quality human biological samples and clinical data for research. Biobank samples are collected in connection with rutine health care and medical examinations, and always require a signed consent form. The samples can be, for example, blood, tissue, various bodily fluids or DNA isolated from cells. In addition, the Biobank of Eastern Finland provides possibility to recruit consented sample donors for further biomedical studies.
The samples are divided into two categories according to their date of collection. Biobank of Eastern Finland has FFPE (formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded) tissue samples collected since 2000 and other sample types from 2016 onwards. Between 2016 and 2023 we have collected more than 22 000 blood samples.

- Possibility to link biobank data to other registry data e.g., Kela (the Social Insurance Institution of Finland) and Statistics Finland including registries of medications, causes of death, social care services, and Hospital discharge register, etc. A permission of Findata is needed to link biobank data to registry data.

The Biobank of Eastern Finland provides samples from its sample repository and clinical information for medical research and R&D purposes. All feasibility and access requests should be submitted via the Requests service in the Fingenious -portal.
