Kaunas Study
Two overlapping studies were carried out in Kaunas city to investigate the cardiovascular diseases in Lithuania.
Kaunas MONICA Study objectives:
- to measure trends in cardiovascular mortality and morbidity and to assess the extent to which these trends are related to changes in risk factor levels and/or medical care.
HAPIEE Lithuania Study objectives:
- to investigate the effect of classical and non-conventional risk factors and social and psychosocial factors (particularly interested in alcohol, nutrition and psychosocial factors) on cardiovascular and other non-communicable diseases in eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union..
In addition to a general description of Kaunas Study, here are described the variables which have been harmonized to the MORGAM Study. The Kaunas MONICA study is identified by Centre number 45 (Kaunas) and name LTU-KAU in MORGAM data. The baseline examinations of the cohorts 01, 02 and 03 were carried out as part of the WHO MONICA Project.
A new representative sample of men and women living in Kaunas city examined in 2001-2002 using the MONICA procedures. In years 2006-2008 the members of the cohorts of the Kaunas MONICA Study and the cohot examined in 2001-2002 were invited to a re-examination as part of the HAPIEE (Health, Alcohol and Psychosocial Factors in Eastern Europe) Project that is described in the Maelstrom Catalogue.

The participants were linked to the mortality and disease event registers. The members of the Kaunas cohorts were invited to a re-examination as part of the HAPIEE Project in 2006-2008. The participants were re-contacted in 2009-2010 by post.

Deaths, cardiovascular events and strokes are followed up for the harmonized MORGAM data for MONICA Cohorts 01-03. See detailed information on follow-up procedures used for MORGAM data in the MORGAM e-publication.
