Troms? Study
The primary aim of the Tromsø Study was to determine causes of the high cardiovascular mortality, and also to develop ways of preventing heart attacks and strokes. Later the increasing emphasis has been put on other chronic diseases and conditions, in particular atrial fibrillation, venous thromboembolism, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis and fractures. The Tromsø Study began in 1974 due to the high mortality rate of cardiovascular disease in Northern Norway. Since then several surveys have been conducted within 7-8 years apart inviting varying age groups of the entire population of Tromsø to participate to the surveys. Therefore, there is major overlap in the cohorts examined.
The eighth survey of the Tromsø Study is planned to be completed in 2024-2025.
In addition to a general description of Tromsø Study, here are described the variables which have been harmonized to the MORGAM Study. The study is identified by Centre number 78 (Tromsø) and name NOR-TRO in MORGAM data. The third, fourth and seventh population surveys (Tromsø3, Tromsø4, and Tromsø7) of the study are included in the MORGAM Project.
Local data from questionnaires, various measurements and clinical examinations from the Tromsø Study surveys 1-7 are described thoroughly in http://tromsoundersokelsen.uit.no/tromso/.

- Follow Up
- The cohorts were linked to the Causes of Death Registry, to the Local Population Registers and to the discharge diagnosis registry of the University Hospital of North Norway in Tromsø using the personal identity number.
- Supplementary Information
- Deaths and cardiovascular events are followed up in the Tromsø 3 and 4 studies for the harmonized MORGAM data, see detailed information on follow-up procedures used for MORGAM data in MORGAM e-publications.

Description of the access procedures
Research projects can apply data for statistical analyses, biological material or admission to contact participants in the previous Tromsø studies via the study webpage. Local variables available are described in the NESSTAR program system.
For access to the harmonized MORGAM data from many MORGAM Centres, one should seek a collaboration with any of the Centre which can submit a publication proposal to the MORGAM/BiomarCaRE Steering Group.
